Mott MacDonald has been appointed to lead a consortium that will provide design, construction supervision and management consultancy services on a major sewerage and waste management project in India. The State Investment Project Management and Implementation Unit (SIPMIU) of Shillong, the capital City of Meghalaya has commissioned Mott MacDonald for this important urban development project which is aimed at improving the environment and well-being of Shillong city dwellers.

Mott MacDonald will help SIPMIU by providing all technical and management consultancy services needed throughout the project design and construction phases. This will range from data collection and conducted geotechnical surveys to detailed engineering design, cost consultancy, technical procurement advice and construction supervision to compliance and handing over of assets.

Mott MacDonald’s project director Ramesh Kumar said, “As the City of Shillong is located at an altitude of 1900 metres and is dotted with hills and valleys, designing a sewerage system will be interesting as well as technically challenging. Mott MacDonald has a successful track record in delivering water and waste water projects around the world and we look forward to assisting on this very important project to the sustainability of the City and well-being of the people of Shillong. The planned sewage collection system will prevent contamination of surface water sources and the solid waste management facility will reduce contamination in the storm run-off, enhancing the environment and quality of life for residents.”

With a capital value of around INR 2100 million (US$ 45 million), the project is due for completion in 2015. This project is part of a wider investment programme to improve urban infrastructure in the capital cities of the north eastern region of India (NERCCDIP) sponsored by the Government of India, with funding assistance from Ministry of Urban Development, Govt. of India and the Asian Development Bank.
