Skandion Clinic in Sweden is setting up a new particle therapy facility to treat cancer with the help of IBA (Ion Beam Applications SA). IBA will install the particle therapy facility, the equipment for two treatment rooms, a scanning beam nozzle for experimental purposes and other ancillary equipment.
The contract also includes all non-clinical operations and a five-year service agreement. However, it is subject to an appeal process filed by Varian and Sumitomo Heavy Industries, which could take between four and six months to resolve. The centre will be managed by a consortium of seven Swedish counties, representing eight university hospitals. The project is expected to cost €40-50m ($50-63m).
